Learn to swing dance

We offer 4-week group classes, workshops, and even private lessons in Swing, Lindy Hop, and many other authentic Jazz dances to get you feeling good on the dance floor.

Ways to Learn

We know that everyone has different ways to learn and different comfort levels with learning a new skill. We want to give everyone a chance to learn these extraordinary dances however they’re comfortable so we offer many ways to learn!

Classes & Workshops

Each month we start a new series of 4-week group classes for all levels. We also run regular workshops to focus on certain aspects of the dance or specific techniques.

Drop-In Lessons

All of our monthly and quarterly dances include a free beginner lesson included with the price of dance admission. These are a great way to try out the dance and see if you want to learn more!

Private Lessons

For students looking for a personalized learning experience, many of our instructors offer private lessons to get you started or hone in on particular areas for improvement.

  • First-time swing/Lindy Hop dancers should sign up for our Intro to Swing Dancing class. It’s perfect for beginners! We will take you through a 4-week course that will move you from two left feet to dancing on the social floor! Swing dancing is an active physical dance that is fun and upbeat. It's the perfect activity to get fit, meet new people, and learn a new skill! This class is offered every month so you can start anytime!

  • Traffic Jam! Sessions are set up as 4-week progressive classes that meet for 1 hour once a week. This gives students the opportunity to reinforce current skills while also developing new skills based on the previous week’s content. New sessions start at the beginning of each month.

  • Swing dancing is a partner dance, with both partners contributing equally to create something fun and exciting together. Leads generally create signals for their partners, Follows, who in turn react to those signals. We encourage you to learn whichever role you are most interested in, or even both! For class balance, we do ask that you stick to the role you have signed up for that month.

  • You never need a partner to sign up for class; we rotate partners to make sure that even if there is a class imbalance, everyone gets to dance. If you do come with a partner and prefer not to rotate, that’s totally fine! However, we have found that students learn faster when they get to try moves with multiple people. Partner dancing is similar to learning a language—the goal is to be able to speak it with everyone.

  • If you’ve been dancing swing or Lindy Hop for awhile, but haven’t taken any of our classes, schedule a 30-minute instructor evaluation so we can help determine your eligibility for our classes with pre-requisites.

After completing an instructor evaluation, you will receive a $20 discount towards your recommended class.

  • Traffic Jam! is an inclusive organization. We welcome and encourage people of all gender identities, ethnicities, races, sexualities, and abilities to participate in our activities.
